Half a century ago, when outer suburbs of Australian cities were still semi-rural, kids kept horses in local paddocks and rode them in neighbourhood streets. As suburbs grew, yards got smaller and regulations got tighter. The suburbs lost their country feel, and horse-riding became an expensive hobby, restricted to equestrian centres and country estates.
The song tells the story of Julie, whose teenage years in the suburbs were filled with family, friends, and horses. After a lifetime living and working in the traffic-filled outskirts of Melbourne, Julie rediscovered the joy of horses by moving to regional NSW, taking a trip back in time to the happy, care-free days of her youth.
